It was announced yesterday that Twitter’s self-serve advertising platform is now open to small and medium sized business owners (SMBs) in the UK, Ireland and Canada to enhance their online reach within their local community by targeting their tweets to potential customers.
The interface was launched in the US in May and its UK counterpart has been highly anticipated by agencies and social savvy businesses up and down the country. Up to now unless you were a big business with an even bigger marketing budget, Twitter ads were simply not an option. Advertising opportunities on the platform that are accessible to the masses opens up a very literal world of possibilities for Pogo and its clients.
From Twitter’s blog:
‘Since we made the Twitter ad platform available to SMBs in the U.S in April, thousands of businesses have connected with people in their local communities and beyond. Additionally, these businesses have seen first hand how Twitter can help build new relationships with customers which positively impact their bottom line.
Twitter advertising lets you amplify your presence on the platform, while giving you total control of your message. Use Promoted Accounts to build an active community of followers who are advocates and influencers for your business. If you’re looking to broaden the reach of message, try Promoted Tweets, which let you engage with users who are not yet following you based on a variety of powerful targeting options.
It takes a just few minutes to get started with Twitter Ads. If you can Tweet, you can advertise on Twitter — all you need is a Twitter account and a credit card. You’re in control of your ads, the audience you want to reach, and of course your budget. Best of all, you will only be charged when people follow your Promoted Account or retweet, reply, favorite or click on your Promoted Tweets. You are never charged for your organic Twitter activity.’

In short, businesses will pay only when someone interacts directly with your promoted tweet. In theory, this service offers a guaranteed return on investment, be it a new Twitter follower or a sale on your site, but we’re eager to hear some experiences before we dive in head first ourselves. It will also be interesting to see how this affects Twitter’s user experience, especially in the run up to Christmas when everyone is fighting for a little piece of the e-commerce pie.
